Seven years ago yesterday, we Lena Louise Mangum was born in Neenah, Wisconsin. After years of waiting, our little miracle arrived.
And now she's this tall, skinny girl about to enter second grade. So here's a little more about our wonderful, crazy, smart little girl.
"I love doing research."
Lena loves learning new things. She said this phrase to her mother not too long ago about loving research. She reads a lot of nonfiction usually about nature and biology. Yesterday she told me she wants to work at an aquarium or a zoo. Or both.
While Kathleen and the girls were in Utah this summer, Lena started telling Kathleen all about goosebumps and how that works. When Kathleen asked how Lena learned about that, Lena told her that she picked up a book off the shelf and started reading it. That girl could read all day long.
"That's my favorite song."
Kathleen and I usually sing songs to the girls when we put them to sleep. Recently Lena has asked for the Mormon hymn 'I Am a Child of God' almost every night. I asked her why, and she said it was her favorite. When I asked her why it was her favorite, she said it's because it reminds her who she is and where she came from. Pretty deep thoughts for a then 6-year-old.
Mother Junior
Lena takes over as mom when the parents aren't close by, or even sometime when we are. She will correct, console, love and defend her sisters. Sometimes Clare and Jane don't appreciate it, and it causes an occasional fight. But there's no doubt that she loves her sisters, and that someday she'll make a great mother.
Nature
Lena loves spending time outside in our wooded backyard collecting sticks, rocks and insects. She even chose nature as the theme for her upcoming birthday party. She has a rock collection, and talks about the pets she's going to get someday.
* * *
We love Lena. She has been a bright ray of light into our livessince the day she born. After trying to get pregnant for years, she was our first little miracle. We will always love our little Lena Louise.
